Circle Graphics, Inc. was launched in 1974 as a type house primarily serving clients in the Washington, DC area. In 1985 the company moved to Maryland as we expanded into the Philadelphia and New York publishing markets. Our most recent move was in 1990 to Columbia, Maryland, our current location.

We were one of the first typesetting companies to transition from a proprietary to an off-the-shelf, PC-based typesetting system; among the first to use offshore labor; and one of the first to produce four-color textbooks in QuarkXpress. Today, we use both InDesign and Quark to produce the textbooks, reference materials, and journals that comprise the majority of our work. We also produce CD-ROM, SGML, HTML, and XML products, as well as eBooks for most eReaders and Smartphones.

We offer a full-service workflow to complement each client’s production process, including project management, publication design, copyediting, photo research, proofreading, and indexing. Please click on Services for detailed descriptions of our full range of services, from Art creation to XML.

Since the year 2000 we have operated a 25-employee facility in Manila, Philippines, which mirrors our operation in Maryland. Circle Graphics Philippines occupies offices on the 17th floor of a modern, 22-story office building in Manila’s central business district. We chose Manila because of its large pool of highly educated, English-speaking personnel. Almost all our Manila employees have a four-year college degree and all have undergone intensive training in pagination, quality control, or both; most have more than 10 years of hands-on experience. We also partner with a Philippine conversion company that has a staff of 12. We comply with all laws of the Philippines including current labor laws, and our employees enjoy above-average benefits.

Circle Graphics has thrived by adapting to our client’s needs and to changing technology while maintaining the quality that we are known for. We are a client-oriented organization, working closely with each client to meet its unique needs today and for the future. The markets for our services are highly competitive, and we strive continually to remain at the forefront in quality and reliability, price, proactive client support, and technical excellence. Feedback from our clients tells us we are meeting those goals.

Our strongest competitive advantages are our experienced staff, in both Maryland and Manila, and our relentless commitment to superior quality, on-time service, and attention to detail. Our clients return to us again and again because of this commitment.

We use many methods to ensure that your publications meet your standards and ours, and we leave nothing to chance—we perform constant quality checks until delivery of print-, web-, or eReader-ready files.

We initially convert your supplied electronic file to a tagged text format compatible with our pagination programs (Xtags or XML). A quality check (QC) is performed at this stage and callouts for tables, figures, equations, or boxes are collated and compared with the manuscript. During this conversion process, specialized teams work simultaneously on the digital art, tabular material, equations, or other elements that make up a complex page.

The galleys produced by these teams are also quality-checked before the actual page assembly. When all parts are ready for pagination, the final pages are QC’d by two different teams before they are uploaded to the Maryland FTP server. Our Maryland team downloads the files, performs several other QC procedures, and prints out the files. They are then checked by our in-house QC team and when final, delivered to you electronically, either by email or via our FTP site(s).

At every stage of the process, whether we create high-resolution PDF files for print or low-resolution PDF files for the web, every page is checked for accuracy against the original printout.

Circle Graphics believes in proactive customer service. We try to anticipate problems before they escalate, and we schedule regular site visits to ensure your satisfaction with our quality, service, and schedules. Prompt response to your email or phone call is an important priority. When you send us an email, it is received by all members of our team so that everyone knows the status and concerns of each project and can step up to handle a problem, question, or concern without delay.

Circle Graphics utilizes dozens of Macintosh and PC workstations to deliver complex content for print and electronic products. We operate four file servers, eight color and monochrome printers, three high-speed color and monochrome scanners/copiers, four high-resolution art scanners, uninterruptible power supplies for each work station, plus ancillary equipment such as card readers, backup drives, DVD burners, and more. All workstations are networked using high-speed Ethernet and gigabit switches. Our offices are connected via redundant FTP servers, and backups are performed three times daily with one backup always kept off the premises. All job are eventually archived and stored indefinitely.

We maintain a huge software repository including the latest versions of Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat, Dreamweaver), multiple versions of QuarkXpress from v3.2 to 9, plus almost any publishing software that you can think of, including many plug-ins for Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign; and a large number of Xtensions for Quark including Autopage, Tableworks, Xmath, Xstyle, and Xtags. Some of our other software packages are Author-Editor, BBedit, Canvas, Calibre, Corel Draw, Delta Graph, Debabelizer, Fetch, Font Explorer, Frame Maker, Free Hand, Flight Check, Math Type, many versions of Microsoft Office, Page Maker, Pit Stop Pro, Retrospect, Sigil, Stuffit, Stylus Studio, Suitcase, Toast, WordPerfect, and many others.
